Tips for Novices

If you find Dasher hard to imagine based on static pictures, please take a look at the animations. When you watch someone else steering Dasher, you may find it looks difficult, but be assured: it is actually very easy; it’s a lot like driving a car.

Quick Tips for Using Dasher

Don’t give up! Most people need about 5-10 minutes of practice before it “clicks” and becomes natural.

Steering Tips

  • Keep moving - Continuous smooth motion is better than stopping and starting
  • Stay centered - Try to keep your pointer in the center of the target box
  • Look ahead - Anticipate where you want to go next
  • Don’t rush - Speed comes naturally with practice

Practice Suggestions

  1. Start slow - Begin by writing simple words and phrases
  2. Use your own text - Practice with text you’d actually write (emails, notes, etc.)
  3. Short sessions - Practice for 10-15 minutes at a time rather than long sessions
  4. Relax - Tension makes precise movements harder

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Overshooting - Moving too far past your target. Make smaller corrections.
  • Stopping completely - Keep your pointer moving, even if slowly
  • Watching the letters too much - Focus on the text output area to see your progress
  • Getting frustrated - Take a break if you feel stuck

Adjusting Dasher Settings

Dasher has many settings you can adjust to make it more comfortable:

  • Speed - Adjust how fast Dasher zooms
  • Alphabet - Choose a different alphabet for your language
  • Colors - Change the color scheme to improve visibility
  • Font size - Make the text larger or smaller
